Newborn St. Louis

If you are sitting there right now counting days since your due date, doing the math in your head, wondering if you already missed your window for newborn photos, take a breath, you have not missed anything, and I say that as someone who has sat with this exact worry next to more exhausted new parents than I can count since 2011.

The internet is full of the same rule, repeated everywhere you look.

The Real Timeline

Traditional posed newborn photos need 5 to 14 days. Lifestyle sessions like mine still work beautifully through 6 to 8 weeks, sometimes later.

The Rule Everyone Tells You

Somewhere between five and fourteen days old, that is the window you will read about again and again, because that is when babies are still curled up the way they were inside you, still sleepy enough to fold into those tiny poses, still small enough for a photographer to arrange them just so. If that is the kind of session you are picturing, the posed kind, baby tucked into a bucket or wrapped like a little burrito, then yes, that tight timing genuinely matters, there is a real, practical reason for the rush.

That Rule Assumes A Different Kind Of Session

Here is what nobody tells you though, that narrow window only matters for that one specific style of newborn photography, and that has never been how I shoot. My sessions are lifestyle, they happen in your own home, and they are led entirely by your baby, not by a five day deadline. That means we are not racing a calendar, we are working with whoever actually shows up that day, awake or asleep, fussy or calm, three days old or six weeks old, and every version of that baby still makes for real, honest images.

Those Weeks Are Already A Lot

Those first weeks are their own kind of hard, feeding around the clock, running on whatever sleep you can grab in pieces, still learning the actual person this brand new little human is turning out to be, and somehow, at the exact same time, they are the weeks you will ache to remember for the rest of your life. Brutally hard and breathtakingly beautiful, sometimes in the very same afternoon, sometimes in the very same hour, and that is not a season that needs one more deadline stacked on top of it.

So Here Is What I Actually Tell Families

Still pregnant? The best time to reach out is your third trimester, just so we can hold a rough date before life gets loud and unpredictable.

Baby already here? If nobody mentioned any of this sooner, you have not missed a thing, I still shoot lifestyle newborn sessions comfortably through six weeks, often eight, sometimes later depending on what you are hoping to capture. There is no expiration date on wanting these days remembered.

So however many days old your baby is right now, if you are still turning this over in your head wondering whether it is too late, it is not. I already get it, and I want to find a day that actually works for the family in front of me.
