What You’re Actually Searching For When You Type Those Words In
Autism friendly photographer St Louis gets typed into a search bar more often at eleven at night than during business hours, I know this because I have talked to enough of the parents who found me exactly that way, kid finally asleep, scrolling with that specific kind of tired that only comes from bracing for something all day long before it even happens, and what you are actually looking for in that search bar is not really a keyword, it is permission, permission to stop apologizing for your kid before a session has even started, permission to bring the whole real version of them instead of the performance version you have been coaching in the car on the way over, permission to believe a photographer might actually mean it this time when they say they get it, so before we go any further, I mean it, I already get it, that is actually most of my people, and I built this whole business around that sentence being true instead of a line on a website.
Autism Friendly Is Not A Setting I Switch On For Certain Clients
I want to be honest about something, autism friendly is the phrase that gets typed into Google, but it is not really the phrase I reach for on my own, neurodivergent is the wider word, the one that holds ADHD and sensory processing differences and anxiety and every other way a brain can work differently than the textbook expects, and I use both because both are true and because I would rather be found by the exact word a tired parent is actually searching than lose them to a technicality, but here is what matters more than either word, this is not a setting I switch on for some clients and leave off for others, it is not a special package or an add on line item, it is the whole business, every single session, it is how I already work before you ever ask me to accommodate anything, because walking alongside families is the whole job, not a bonus feature.
What A Session Actually Looks Like Here
The actual photography, the part where the shutter clicks, only takes about fifteen or twenty minutes no matter whose kid is in front of the camera, that has always been true, so I book longer time slots on purpose and I use that extra time for the part that actually matters, letting your kid land in a new place at their own pace instead of mine, no forced eye contact, no chin down shoulders back now smile script running the show, if headphones need to stay on the whole time they stay on, if a fidget or a stuffed something needs to be in every single frame it is in every single frame and honestly some of my favorite photos I have ever taken have exactly that in them, if we need to pause and just sit somewhere for a few minutes before anyone picks up a camera again, we pause, both things can be true here, this can be hard some days and it can still end in something real and beautiful, sometimes in the very same afternoon, and the goal was never a compliant kid holding still on command, it was always the true moment underneath that, the one that shows up once nobody is chasing it anymore.
If You’re Reading This Right Now, In September
Fall mini sessions are open right now, every Saturday through September and October plus the first two Saturdays of November, rotating across four parks I know the way you know a place you have walked a hundred times, Bee Tree, Tower Grove, Faust, and Forest, forty five minute slots starting at nine while the light is soft and the parks are still waking up, five images included for two hundred twenty five dollars, and if fall pictures are not the thing you are searching for tonight, if it is senior year weighing on you instead, the packages there are flat now too, one number decided before you ever book instead of a session fee today and a surprise bill once the gallery shows up, so whichever season of your family’s life brought you to this page, there is an actual next step waiting on the other end of it, not just more scrolling.
The Smile I’m Still Chasing
People ask me sometimes why I do this the way I do it, why the extra time, why no shot list running like a stopwatch, and it always comes back to something small that happened years before I ever owned a camera with any intention behind it, my own son was maybe a year old, not a baby anymore but not quite anything else yet either, on his tummy doing what babies do, and I was just talking to him the way you talk to your kid without expecting much back, and then it happened, this tiny movement of his lips into a smile, his eyes finding mine, and I did not know yet that we would wait so long for more expressions to follow, I just knew in that one second that something in me broke open and I cried, because it gave me hope, real hope, that things were going to be okay even while I also knew it would take time, I have come to believe that kind of hope is not something you talk yourself into, it is something you are given, and that is still the picture I am chasing every time I pick up a camera now, not the posed one, the one where something real gets room to show up on its own, because I believe every kid has one of those in them, we just have to build the kind of afternoon that leaves space for it.
How To Book
You do not have to know exactly which session type you need yet, or explain your kid to me before I meet them, just reach out and we will figure the rest out together, at whatever pace your family actually needs. Come as you are, walking alongside is the whole job.
